Student Parking Information

There are many modes of transportation to get you around Lawrence, both on and off campus. Since parking spaces are limited and permits oversold, we encourage you to consider whether or not you really need a car on campus.

If you do need to drive to/park on campus, then you will need to purchase a parking permit. Parking permits are not valid everywhere, and you need to pay the parking meters — no matter what. There is no free parking on campus!

If you don't buy a parking permit, you will get a ticket anywhere you park on campus. There is a sign at the entrance to each parking lot which says what time of day a permit is required to park there. Some parking lots are restricted year-round (Park & Ride, Red, Blue and Gold), and others are restricted only when classes are in session (Yellow and residence halls). Check the Parking Regulations for more detailed information.

Students are eligible for the following types of parking permits:

Park & Ride — $100/yr

For students who live off campus, and want to have quick and easy access to campus. The Park & Ride parking lots (301 & 302) are located on West Campus near 23rd & Iowa, and then you get on a bus that takes you directly to Main Campus.

Park & Ride is route 41, and the schedule can be found on the Lawrence Transit web site.

University Housing — $190/yr

For students who live in residence halls. This permit allows the student to park only in lots that are close to where they are living, not in all of the housing parking lots. Housing permits are also not valid in yellow, red, blue or gold zones.

For students who live in Templin, Lewis, Hashinger, Ellsworth and McCollum Halls or Jayhawk Towers. Permit is valid only in lot 300.

Yellow — $200/yr

For students who live off campus. Yellow zones are located all over campus, but because parking permits are oversold, you may not get to park exactly where you want.

Parking Garage Permits

There are also two parking garages on campus, each with a separate waiting list. Students must be currently enrolled to be on the waiting list, and must come to the Parking & Transit office in person to get signed up.

Mississippi Street Parking Garage — $235/yr

For any student living off campus or in the scholarship halls. If there is a waiting list, it generally takes less than 1 year to become eligible to purchase this permit.

Allen Fieldhouse Parking Garage — $235/yr

For any graduate student whose program and/or primary office location is in one of the following buildings: Art & Design, Dole, Eaton, Green Haworth, Learned, Lindley, Murphy, Malott, Military Science, or Robinson. It can take up to 2 years to become eligible to purchase this permit.

A word about tickets...

There are two major consequences of not paying your tickets:

  1. We put a hold on your ability to enroll or get a transcript or diploma.
  2. If you get more than three (3) tickets that remain unpaid for ten (10) business days, we might tow your car.

We recommend that you pay or appeal tickets as soon as you get them!

Did you know?

Students with any valid surface lot parking permit may purchase a night/weekend access permit for the Mississippi Street Parking Garage for only $5.
