KU students, employees and visitors will have an exciting new parking and transportation option starting in August: A new 1,500-space Park & Ride lot served by a free express bus to campus.
The West Campus Park & Ride lot — accessible at Clinton Parkway and Crestline Road — will offer guaranteed parking, including 50 parking meters and 24 handicapped parking spaces. Express buses will depart the lot every six minutes (during peak hours) and bring riders to central campus in 10 minutes.
Students who purchase a Park & Ride parking permit also receive a free KU on Wheels bus pass — worth $140! — to reach areas of campus not served by the express bus. The express buses are fully accessible and will be FREE to anyone on campus. They may be boarded from any one of 11 stops on campus:
When Does It Open? The Park & Ride bus service will begin August 14, with classes starting August 17.
How Big Are the Buses? The Park & Ride Express will feature five, 35-foot long ADA-compliant buses that carry about 50 passengers.
Can Anyone Ride the Express Buses? Yes. You only need a permit to park in the lot, or pay the meter. Anyone may board the express buses at any of the stops on campus. And the buses are free!
What Are the Hours of Operation? Buses will operate 7 a.m. - 10:30 p.m., Monday - Friday, and will leave the Park & Ride lot every six minutes at peak times, and eight to ten minutes during non-peak periods, decreasing to 20 minute intervals after 5:30 p.m. The ride to central campus is expected to take eight to ten minutes.
What About Security? The lot will be well lit and there will be surveillance cameras installed.
What About the Old Park & Ride Lot? Last year’s Park & Ride lot at the Lied Center, served by KU on Wheels, will no longer be used as a Park & Ride lot. Instead, it will now be dedicated to visitors to the Lied Center and Dole Institute of Politics, and overflow parking for the Daisy Hill residence halls.
The Parking Department will sell Park & Ride permits this year. Students will be able to purchse Park & Ride permits through online permit sales beginning April 17, and employees may purchase the permits through payroll deduction beginning in early May. We will send out a broadcast email when online permit sales are open, and permits will be mailed after Aug. 1.
Parking Permit Cost: $205 per year
Incoming Freshmen: This is the only KU parking permit available to incoming freshmen who do not plan to live in university student housing. Upperclassmen not living in university student housing may purchase a yellow surface lot permit or the Park & Ride permit.
