A medical permit is intended for KU faculty, staff or students who have a temporary need for closer parking due to a medical condition. If you need special parking for more than 6 to 8 weeks, we recommend that you talk to your doctor about obtainint a temporary handicap placard from the state. See here for additional information.

The Kansas Department of Revenue has an online form for a handicap placard on their web page.

A medical permits costs $8 per week in gold zones regardless of what type of parking permit you have now.

Procedure:

  1. Pick up the Medical Parking Permit application packet from the KU Parking office, or print the forms here. (You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0 for these forms.)


  2. Give the Physician letter to your doctor, and remind them to mail their request on your behalf directly to the Parking Department, 1501 Irving Hill Road, Lawrence, KS 66045. We can not issue the permit without having received this letter.


  3. Complete the Certification of Medical Need for Parking form.


  4. Bring the Certification of Medical Need form and the checklist to the Parking Department. You will need to fill out a permit application card when you come into our office.


  5. When you turn in these forms, a Parking staff member will take time to verify the information you have provided, then go over the checklist with you to make sure you understand all of the rights and responsibilities of having a medical parking permit, along with the possible consequences of abusing the medical parking permit.


  6. Upon completion of this process, you will be issued a laminated hangtag with the correct expiration date and color zone marked on it. You must pay for your permit at this time.
